Bengaluru Techie Suicide: Allegations Of Extortion, Harassment Against Wife, Family; Law Ministry Comments

Without making any direct reference to the case, the union ministry's post on X talked about handling all contentious issues, like child custody, family disputes in a timely and impartial way.

"Family Courts are a dedicated platform for resolving disputes within families, ensuring that issues related to marriage, child custody, and inheritance are handled with care, sensitivity, and without the conventional formal court style," said the post on the ministry's official handle.

It also stated that family courts "focus on timely and impartial solutions, while also promoting reconciliation to help restore relationships within families".

Atul Subhash was found dead in his Bengaluru home in the Manjunath Layout area, on Monday. The 34-year-old techie from Uttar Pradesh left behind a 24-page suicide note and a 90-minute video where he elucidated allegations of harassment and extortion against his wife and her family.

The suicide note included extensive details of years of emotional distress from marital issues, multiple cases filed against him, and harassment by his wife, her relatives, police said.

About the suicide note and video

In a video making rounds on social media recorded before the suicide, Subhash claimed that his wife had filed several false cases against him and demanded Rs 2 lakh per month in maintenance for herself and their four-year-old son.

In his elaborate suicide note, he alleged that ``on multiple occasions, his wife instigated him to die by suicide''.

Moreover, he alleged that his wife’s family repeatedly harassed him for money. When he refused, his wife reportedly left their Bengaluru home with their son in 2021.

Subhash further alleged, "My wife will keep my child alienated and file more cases to harass me, my elderly parents, and my brother, using the money I pay her as maintenance. Instead of using it for our child's welfare, she is weaponising it against us."

In the note, Subhash also levelled serious allegations against a family court judge in Uttar Pradesh. A placard reading 'Justice is Due' was found hanging in his house.

He also said, "I feel that I should kill myself because the money I earn is making my enemies stronger. That same money will be used to destroy me, and this cycle will keep going.

"With the money from my taxes, this court and police system will harass me, my family, and other good people. So, the supply of value should be finished", he further said.

Atul reportedly sent his death note to several people via email and shared it with a WhatsApp group of an NGO he was associated with. Additionally, in his death note, Subhash requested that custody of his child be granted to his parents, stating that they could "provide better values".

In the wake of the developments, Subhash’s brother, Bikas Modi, reportedly filed a police complaint, alleging that the wife and her family had "fabricated false cases" and demanded a settlement of Rs 3 crore for these cases.

What did police say?

According to a senior police officer, "Based on a complaint from his family, we have registered a case of abetment of suicide against his wife and her family members. All the allegations are being looked into, and we are investigating the matter." No arrests have been made yet, he added.

The police officer further added preliminary investigations revealed that Subhash had been facing marital discord with his wife, who had also registered a case against him in Uttar Pradesh.
