Mohammedan SC 1-2 Bengaluru FC, ISL: Milestone Man Sunil Chhetri Breaks Hearts Of MSC Fans
With his 82nd minute strike, Chhetri became the first player in the history of the Indian Super League to score against all 15 clubs that have participated in the tournament till now
Chhetri scored in the 82nd minute and then it was his header that made way for the winner just moments before the final whistle to turn the tables for Bengaluru to steal victory from the jaws of defeat.
Before Chhetri's heroics, Mohammedan SC's defence and their goalkeeper Bhaskar Roy were doing a great job to keep the Blues at bay after they had already scored an early opener. Cesar Manzoki had headed the first goal for Mohammedan as he rose the highest to smash a perfect header on Kasimov’s beautiful corner.
Bengaluru kept the ball for the large part of the game but could not find the equaliser. Mohammedan's custodian Roy denied them a few times when they threatened to equalise. Mohammedan too got a few good chances but were denied by Bengaluru goalkeeper Gurpreet Singh Sandhu.
Things were getting desparate for the Blues when coach Gerald Zaragoza brought on Chhetri in the 53rd minute. After a few missed chances, the opportunity to level scores was handed to Chhetri on a platter in the 82nd minute by the Mohammedan SC scorer Manzoki who brought down Capo in the penalty box. Referee instantly gave a penalty to the Blues and Chhetri found the bottom right corner to find the much needed equaliser for the Blues.
Just when it seemed that the teams would share points, Chhetri combined with Lalremtluanga Fana to produce a moment of brilliance just seconds before the final whistle.
Fana's cross from the left found Chhetri inside the box who rose unmarked to head the ball into the goal. The goal was registered as on own goal but Bengaluru FC could not care less.
The win takes Bengaluru FC to the top of the ISL table, displacing Mohun Bagan who have a game in hand.
With his 82nd minute strike, Chhetri became the first player in the history of the Indian Super League to score against all 15 clubs that have participated in the tournament till now. The win also ensured that Bengaluru FC have registered wins against all three Kolkata clubs this season.
