India's D. Gukesh lost the first game to the Chinese grandmaster Liren. he resigned on the 42nd move in Round 1, giving Ding Liren a 1-0 lead in the FIDE World Chess Championship 2024. This marked Ding’s first win in 304 days. However, the Indian Candidates Winner bounced back in the second game, holding the reigning champion to a draw with Black after 23 moves. The score now stands at 1.5-0.5 in Ding's favor as the action moves and the Indian looks for the first win in Round 3 at Resorts World Sentosa, Singapore.

The 2024 World Chess Championship match between D Gukesh and Ding Liren is a 14-game contest. The first player to reach 7.5 points will claim an unassailable lead and win the title. If the score reaches 7-7 after all 14 games, a tiebreaker will decide the winner. Currently, Gukesh has just 0.5 points, while Liren leads with 1.5 points. The Indian challenger will need to mount a strong comeback and secure at least 7 more points to stay in the race for the title. And, if Gukesh wins the crown, the world will see the youngest ever chess champion.

After drawing Game 2 of the 2024 World Chess Championship, D. Gukesh revealed his plan of taking it "one game at a time" as he looks to upstage Ding Liren. "Today was a good day, and hopefully, we’ll have many more good days," he said. Gukesh also thanked his second, Grzegorz Gajewski, for his support in both chess and mental preparation.

"I will try to play a good game because the only way to win is to play well," Gukesh added.

After 16 moves of play, both Ding Liren and Gukesh D have their bishop pairs in place. But what exactly is the Bishop Pair Advantage?

Ding's bishop, had been stuck on the c2 square since the 10th move, but now it has been trapped by the Indian.

Ding Liren is under immense time pressure!

With only 1:50 left on the clock, he’s now required to make nine moves in less than two minutes.

Ding spent over four minutes on his 31st move and now has less than two minutes to complete the remaining moves.

As the 30th move was completed, Ding had just 6 minutes and 32 seconds to make the next 10 moves.

And, the Indian Grandmaster beats the defending champion Ding Liren in the third game after 37 moves!

Gukesh equalised the score of the FIDE World Chess Championship 2024 at 1.5-1.5!

The record books have been rewritten today!

D Gukesh, who has never beaten Ding Liren in classical chess before, has broken that streak in the 2024 FIDE World Chess Championship.

In all their previous encounters with Ding playing with black pieces, the Chinese champion had always come out on top, until today.

Gukesh D: “It feels great. The last two days I was happy with my play. My play today was even better, I feel good at the board and today I just managed to outplay my opponent which is always nice.”
