Cyclone Fengal Weakens, Puducherry Deals With Aftermath Of Landfall | Latest Updates

Heavy rains, accompanied by gusty winds, lashed northern Tamil Nadu and neighbouring Puducherry as Cyclone Fengal made landfall.

After lashing Chennai and Puducherry with heavy rainfall as an effect of landfall on Saturday evening, Cyclone Fengal weakened on Sunday as predicted by the India Meteorological Department (IMD).

The Met department has issued a warning of heavy rainfall over Tamil Nadu until December 2.

Three people were electrocuted in different rain-related incidents in Chennai, according to news reports. However, there were no immediate reports of major damage in Tamil Nadu and Puducherry.

This is the second cyclone to develop over the Bay of Bengal this season. Heavy rainfall is expected to continue through Sunday (December 1, 2024), though the intensity will depend on cloud cover.

  • Cyclone Fengal weakens on Sunday

    According to the latest update from the India Meteorological Department (IMD), Cyclone Fengal has weakened into a deep depression. The cyclonic weakened on Sunday but torrential downpours under its influence paralysed the union territory of Puducherry. The Army stepped in to evacuate stranded persons in inundated streets. Villupuram in neighbouring Tamil Nadu also suffered following heavy rains and inundation, with Chief Minister M K Stalin terming the rainfall in the district as 'unprecedented.'

  • Puducherry deals with the aftermath of landfall

    Normal life was crippled in Puducherry, as the union territory received 46 cm rainfall, bettering the previous best of 21 cm recorded on October 31, 2004. Cyclone Fengal triggered heavy rainfall, leading to inundation of all residential areas on the outskirts Of boulevard limits. Trees were uprooted at various places under the impact of the cyclonic storm, PTI reported. Power outage was reported in most of the localities since 11 pm on Saturday.

    The Indian Army deployed its soldiers and boats and evacuated stranded people. According to a Defence release, about 200 people were rescued from three different locations in Puducherry.

  • Rains Lash Tamil Nadu, Puducherry
    Cyclone Fengal-triggered heavy rains, accompanied by gusty winds, lashed northern Tamil Nadu and neighbouring Puducherry on Saturday. The rains inundated many parts of the city, though no immediate reports of major damage were received. 

    Steady rains affected public transport in Chennai, its nearby districts, and Puducherry, including bus, train, and flight services. People from vulnerable areas were moved to safe shelters by authorities. From the afternoon, the rains turned intermittent in most areas, and by nightfall, they ceased.

  • IMD Issues Warning For TN, Puducherry And AP Coasts

    The IMD issued a warning for North Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, and the adjoining South Andhra Pradesh coasts.

    “The Cyclonic Storm ‘FENGAL’ [pronounced as FEINJAL] over north coastal Tamil Nadu and Puducherry crossed the coast and lay close to Puducherry. It is likely to move westward slowly and weaken gradually into a deep depression over north coastal Tamil Nadu and Pondicherry. The weather warnings are ongoing, and the system is being continuously monitored by the Doppler Weather Radar at Chennai and Karaikal,” the IMD stated in a post on X (formerly Twitter).

  • Chennai Airport Resumes Services 

    Chennai airport, which had temporarily suspended its flight operations, resumed them at 1 am on Sunday. It was shut on Saturday after two runways and a taxiway were inundated following heavy rainfall caused by the cyclone.

    Visuals from the airport showed large queues at the entry gates. News agency PTI reported that 55 flights were canceled, and 19 others were diverted, including both domestic and international services.

  • MK Stalin, Udhayanidhi Oversee Relief Efforts 

    Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin and his deputy, Udhayanidhi Stalin, reviewed the action plan and conducted spot inspections. The Greater Chennai Corporation distributed food to 232,200 people. Nearly 200 people from low-lying areas were sheltered in eight relief camps. 

    Udhayanidhi told reporters, "Food is being provided free of cost in all 386 Amma Canteens today." He also stated that 1,700 motor pumps were being used to clear waterlogging at 334 locations on a war footing. As many as 27 fallen trees were removed immediately.
