Watch: Ricky Ponting Is Pelted With Grapes During Live Ashes Coverage, Gets Irate At English Fans
Ponting was angry at the grapes being pelted and vowed to catch the culprits as he gave a menacing stare down at the crowd.
Despite Harry Brook's menacing 85, the rest of the English batters could not handle the Aussie bowling attack. Brook put up a 100-plus partnership with Moeen Ali but some drastic collapses affected England's momentum as they were bowled out for 283.
In reply, Australia started strongly and despite losing David Warner (24), Usman Khawaja (26*) and Marnus Labuschagne (1*) are still at the crease with the visitors at 61/1 at stumps.
However, amidst all the crackling action on the field where the Aussies are looking to end their winless streak of Ashes away from home, their former skipper Ricky Ponting was a victim of crowd trouble during the live coverage of the 5th Ashes Test.
It happened when Ponting was giving his opinion on the fifth day's proceedings alongisde Sky Sports presenter Ian Ward and Aussie spinner Todd Murphy at The Oval. As Punter and Ward ended their discussion with Murphy, the former was pelted with grapes from the stands.
Ward tried to laugh off the incident but 'Punter' said that he would catch hold of the culprits as he gave a 'stare down' at The Oval crowd.
Ponting, shaking in rage, said: “I’ve just been hit by a grape. I wouldn’t mind finding out who that was actually.”
Earlier, Aussie skipper Pat Cummins won the toss and elected to bowl first on bowler-friendly conditions. His bowlers did the job of bundling out England for 283 as Australia will resume Day 2 on 61 for one with Khawaja on 26 off 75 and Labuschagne on 2 off 23.
