India successfully conducted a flight test for the new generation Akash-NG missile off the coast of Odisha on Friday, marking a significant advancement in the country's military capabilities.

The missile, launched from the integrated test range in Chandipur at 1030 hours, targeted a high-speed unmanned aerial target at a very low altitude. The defence ministry stated that the successful firing of the Akash-NG missile opens the path for its user trials.?

Defence Ministry statement

The defence ministry in a statement said, "During the flight test, the target was successfully intercepted by the weapon system and destroyed."

"It has validated the functioning of the complete weapon system consisting of the missile with indigenously developed radio frequency seeker, launcher, multi-function radar and command, control and communication system," it added.

According to a PTI report, the system's performance was confirmed through data collected by various radars, telemetry, and electro-optical tracking systems.

The Akash-NG system, known for its capability to intercept high-speed and agile aerial threats, is a state-of-the-art missile system with a range of around 80 km.

Reaction to the success of the missile

The event was witnessed by senior officials from DRDO, Indian Air Force, Bharat Dynamics Limited, and Bharat Electronics Ltd.

Defence Minister Rajnath Singh praised the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO), the Indian Air Force, and the involved public sector undertakings for the successful flight test. He highlighted that the system's successful development would further strengthen the country's air defence capabilities.

DRDO Chairman Samir V Kamat also extended congratulations to the teams associated with the successful flight test of the missile.
