Assam: Suspected 'Dacoit' Shot Dead In Police Encounter Was A Farmer, Reveals CID Probe

A probe into the killing of a?man who?was?suspected to be a dacoit in Assam's Udalguri district in February year,?revealed that he was a farmer and that it was a case of "mistaken identity".

The probe conducted by the Criminal?Investigation Department (CID) said that?the person killed in the police encounter?was not dacoit Kenaram Boro (also known as Kenaram Basumatary) but a person who?identified as Dimbeswar Muchahary.

His family asserted that he was a "small-time farmer". According to a report by Times of India, the police?had claimed that two men had fired at them, and the officials had fired in retaliation.

Following claims by the family that?the person who died was not Kenaram Basumatary, but a man named Dimbeshwar Muchahary, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said that?there may have been a mistake in identifying the man who died and ordered a CID?probe.?

Subsequently,?a DNA analysis was conducted and it was found that the body was of Muchahary and not of Boro, the police said.

Kenaram Boro is a?former member of the banned outfit National Democratic Front of Bodoland and?wanted in several cases of armed robberies in Assam and Meghalaya. He was arrested earlier with firearms on several occasions, the police officer said, according to a report by NDTV.?

However, the police?claimed that Muchahary also had criminal records, according to the TOI report.
