KUWAIT CITY — The death of Kuwait's Emir Sheikh Nawaf al-Ahmad al-Jaber al-Sabah is resonating across the Middle East and the world. The royal court confirmed that the 86-year-old leader passed away on Saturday, just over three years after assuming power in the US-allied Gulf oil producer.

The late emir’s half-brother and the Crown Prince,?Sheikh Meshal al-Ahmad al-Sabah, 83, who has been Kuwait's de facto ruler since 2021 when the frail emir handed over most of his duties, was named as Sheikh Nawaf's successor.

Jordan:

Jordan’s King Abdullah bin Al Hussein shared a message of condolences on X, expressing sorrow on Sheikh Nawaf’s death.

Qatar:

Qatar’s Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani expressed sadness about the Kuwaiti leader’s passing and announced a three-day period of mourning with lowered flags.

Saudi Arabia:

Saudi Arabia’s King Salman and Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman sent condolences to the people of Kuwait and announced a three-day period of mourning.?

“The Kingdom of Saudi Arabia and its people share the sorrows of the brothers in Kuwait,” ?said a statement by the Saudi Royal Court.

United Arab Emirates:

Emirati President Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed praised Sheikh Nawaf as a wise leader and a key instigator in strengthening Kuwait-UAE relations.

United States:

US President Joe Biden expressed being "saddened" by the Kuwaiti leader’s death, describing Sheikh Nawaf as a valued partner and true friend of the United States throughout his decades of service.

United Kingdom:

British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak expressed sadness, remembering the emir as a friend of the United Kingdom who would be remembered fondly.

India:

Prime Minister Narendra Modi conveyed deep sadness on Emir's passing. Government of India has decided that there will be one day's State Mourning on 17th December throughout India.

United Nations General Assembly:

Dennis Francis, president of the 78th session of the United Nations General Assembly, extended heartfelt condolences to the emir’s family and the people of Kuwait.

European Union:

The EU expressed condolences and sympathy, remembering the late Emir’s dedication to serving his country and his commitment to regional stability.

“The EU remembers late Emir’s unwavering dedication and commitment to serving his country, even in turbulent times. He will be remembered by all who work for regional stability and mutual understanding between nations,” the regional body said in a statement.
