The son of real estate agent Mary Lee and aspiring actor Glenn Vernon Martin, Martin was born in Waco, Texas, on August 14, 1945. Martin was brought up in Inglewood, California, with his sister Melinda and then in Garden Grove, California, in a Baptist family. He is of English, Scottish, Welsh, Scots-Irish, German, and French ancestry. Martin participated in Garden Grove High School cheerleading. Martin's first job was selling guide books at Disneyland.
