Bypoll Results 2024: Priyanka Gandhi Wins Wayanad; TMC Wins All 6 Seats In Bengal; BJP Redeems Itself In UP

The Parliamentary bypolls in Kerala's Wayanad reassured people's faith in grand-old party Congress after they chose first timer Priyanaka Gandhi Vadra as their MP months after Rahul Gandhi won from the same seat.

The ambience in Bengal has been quite tense over the last few months due to the brutal rape and murder of a female doctor in Kolkata's RG Kar Medical College and Hospital. But despite the massive public outcry, TMC won all the six bypoll seats in the state months after their massive Lok Sabha poll win.

Uttar Pradesh

This bypolls of 9 seats in UP was a litmus test for the ruling BJP in the state after their disappointing performance during the Lok Sabha polls. But the party was able to redeem itself after it bagged six seats and their ally RLD also won one seat. The Samajwadi Party who saw a sudden rise in people's trust with their party at the Lok Sabha only managed to win two seats this time.

Bypolls were conducted in other states including Punjab, Rajasthan, Assam, Bihar, Chhattisgarh, Gujarat, Kerala, Karnataka, Madhya Pradesh, Meghalaya and Uttarakhand. Congress won all three seats in Karnataka and Aam Aadmi Party won three out of four seats in Punjab. Bharatiya Janata Party scored well in Rajasthan, Assam and Uttarakhand.

The Election Commission of India organized the bypolls for 48 assembly constituencies and two parliamentary seats in two phases. Voting for 31 assembly constituencies and the Wayanad parliamentary seat was scheduled for November 13. While, the remaining  14 assembly seats and the Nanded parliamentary seat were held on November 20.

Bypolls were held in 31 assembly constituencies across 10 states along with Wayanad lok sabha constituency. The spotlight was on Wayanad as Priyanka Gandhi made her electoral debut. Wayanad recorded a turnout of 64.27%. In West Bengal, Taldangra recorded the highest turnout at 75.20%, while Channapatna recorded the highest turnout with 84.26% in Karnataka.

Chhattisgarh's Raipur city recorded a turnout of 46.43%, Ramgargh's 71.45% turnout was the highest in Rajasthan, MP's Vijaypur recorded 75.27% (highest among two seats), and Gujarat's Vav recorded a turnout of 68.01%.

Bypolls were held in 15 constituencies across UP, Punjab, Kerala, and Uttarakhand on November 20. In UP, Kundarki recorded the highest voter turnout with 57.32%, and in Punjab, the turnout was highest in Gidderbaha with 78.10% till 5 pm. Uttarakhand's Kedarnath recorded 56.78% and Kerala's Palakkad recorded a turnout of 62.25%.

Nanded, a parliamentary constituency, recorded a voter turnout of 67.81%.

In Uttar Pradesh, nine assembly seats are up for grabs, including several that were vacated after sitting legislators were elected to the Lok Sabha earlier this year. The stakes are high for the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), the ruling party in UP, as it faced an unexpected setback in the 2024 Lok Sabha elections. 

Political observers view UP bypolls as a precursor to the much-anticipated 2027 Uttar Pradesh Assembly elections. For the SP, these bypolls represent an opportunity to reclaim lost ground, and for the BJP - a battle of prestige. READ MORE

Kerala's Wayanad Lok Sabha constituency is under the spotlight as it marks the electoral debut of Congress general secretary Priyanka Gandhi Vadra.

Wayanad assembly seat was earlier held by Priyanka’s brother Rahul Gandhi, who won the constituency in both the 2019 and 2024 general elections.

With around 14 lakh eligible voters in the region, this year voter turnout was recorded at 64.24%, which is the lowest turnout in Wayanad since its first election in 2009

Ten months after the Assembly polls were held in Rajasthan, the desert state is once again abuzz with electoral politics, with the announcement of bypolls for seven constituencies. The stakes are high for the ruling BJP as well as the opposition Congress.

Six out of the seven seats were held by INDIA bloc members, out of which five were elected to the Lok Sabha earlier this year. The sixth MLA, Zubair Ahmed from the Ramgarh constituency, had passed away. Salumbar's BJP MLA Amritlal Meena also died a few months ago. READ MORE

The bypoll is seen as a crucial test for Priyanka's political mettle as she seeks to carry forward the legacy of her family in the region. Her major rival is BJP’s Navya Haridas, who is a mechanical engineer with a B.Tech degree from KMCT Engineering College, Calicut University.

The by-elections in West Bengal were held in Sitai, Madarihat, Naihati, Haroa, Medinipur, and Taldangra constituencies on November 13 and the counting of the votes will take place on November 23.

Sporadic incidents of violence, including the death of a local Trinamool Congress worker in a shootout-cum-crude bomb attack were reported on the day of the polls, while the voter turnout across six constituencies stood at 69.29 per cent till 5 pm. READ MORE

Amid allegation of rigging and hooliganism, all nine assembly constituencies of Uttar Pradesh that went to bypolls on November 20 recorded a voter turnout a little over 50 percent.

The SP accused the BJP of manipulating the electoral process and questioned the impartiality of the Election Commission (EC). The BJP shot back, alleging that SP workers were engaging in hooliganism and attempting to rig votes. It claimed both men and women were illegally voting disguised in burqas (veil). READ MORE

Out of the nine constituencies in UP, Karhal holds the most importance for the Samajwadi Party as it is considered to be the stronghold of the Yadav family. The seat was vacated after the SP president Akhilesh Yadav was elected to Lok Sabha from Kannauj this year. 

In 2022, the SP had bagged four of the nine constituencies - Kundarki, Katehri, Sisamau and Karhal, while three - Khair, Phulpur and Ghaziabad - were won by the BJP. The rest two seats - Manjhawan and Meerapur - ere with the Rashtriya Lok Dal (RLD) and NISHAD party respectively. The two outfits are coalition partners of the incumbent BJP.

The bypolls were held for seven seats in Rajasthan including Jhunjhunu, Dausa, Deoli-Uniara, Khinvsar, Chorasi, Salumber and Ramgarh assembly constituencies on November 20.

Currently, the 200-seat Rajasthan state assembly has 114 MLAs of the BJP, 65 of the Congress, three of the Bharat Adivasi Party (BAP), two of the BSP, one of the Rashtriya Lok Dal (RLD) and eight Independent MLAs.

The by-elections won’t affect the stability of the BJP government, but they are seen as a chance for Chief Minister Bhajanlal Sharma and BJP state president Madanlal Rathore to regain some support, especially after the party's poor performance in the Lok Sabha elections, where it lost 11 out of 25 seats. The countdown is on for the by-election results across the contry. These by-elections, held across 46 assembly constituencies and two parliamentary seats in 13 states, have generated significant political buzz and anticipation in the region. 

The battle for these seats has been intense, with major political parties fiercely competing for a chance to reclaim their influence. However, the final outcome will only be clear once the Election Commission of India announces the results.

In Sikkim, the ruling Sikkim Krantikari Morcha already won two seats unopposed after opposition party - Sikkim Democratic Front (SDF) withdrew its candidates ahead of polls.

From Soreng-Chakhung, the son of Sikkim Chief Minister, Aditya Golay (Tamang) won the seat after SDF's Prem Bahadur backed out. And from Namvhi-Singhithang, Satish Chandra Rai won unopposed following the withdrawal of SDF's Danial Rai.

Congress general secretary Priyanka Gandhi is leading in Kerala's look sabha constituency of Wayanad - the most anticipated bypoll.

In Palakkad, NDA's C Krishnakumar is leading as of now and LDF is leading in Chelakkara.

BJP's Navya Haridas is the major opponent of Priyanka Gandhi Vadra in Wayanad. She expressed confidence in winning bypolls claiming "If people need development in Wayanad, then they would select NDA..."

In Uttar Pradesh, where the BJP and SP are fighting for dignity and dominance, early trends show a fifty - fifty division. In Sishamau, Samajwadi Party candidate Naseem Solanki is leading as of now. While in Majhawan, Bhartiya Janta Party 's Suchismita Maurya is leading the early trends.

The Sishamau seat has long been an impenetrable fortress for parties other than Samajwadi Party (SP), with Solanki securing victories in the constituency three times―in 2012, 2017 and 2022. Now, as the seat has fallen vacant and Solanki is out of the picture, his wife, Naseem Solanki, has stepped up to the challenge. She describes her mission as one to ‘prove my (her) husband’s innocence’, as she seeks to continue the family’s hold in the region.  READ MORE

BJP's Asha Nautiyal is leading early trends in Uttarakhand's Kedarnath constituency.  Uttarakhand’s Kedarnath seat also went to polls on November 20. The assembly seat in Rudraprayag district fell vacant after the death of BJP MLA Shaila Rani Rawat in July this year.

Six candidates are in the fray, with BJP's Asha Nautiyal and Congress's Manoj Rawat seen as the main contenders in a direct contest. Both Nautiyal and Rawat have previously represented the Kedarnath assembly seat. 

Priyanka Gandhi is leading with 51930 votes in Wayanad in early trends. She is 37301 votes ahead CPI's Sathyan Mokeri. BJP's Navya Haridas is trailing in third position with 7613 votes.

Meanwhile in Palakkad, BJP's C Krishnakumar is leading with 4127 votes as of now. And in Chelakkara, CPI (M)' U R Pradeep is leading with 11792 votes currently.

In Punjab, bypolls were held in four assembly constituencies. Here are the early trends for each constituency.

The Kerala picture is clear. Congress gains comfortable lead in Palakkad. Now it seems there are no surprises in Kerala, anti incumbency is not visible as LDF maintains its strong hold in Chelakkara and gaining a second position in Palakkad, Priyanka is far ahead as expected.

It seems that the BJP would not be able to open account in Assembly this time too.

In the lok sabha constituency of Nanded in Maharashtra, Congress' Chavan Ravindra Vasantrao is leading with 11296 votes. Vasantrao is followed by BJP's Santukrao Maroteao Hambarde and 17 others.

BJP's Navya Haridas, who is contesting against debutant Priyanka Gandhi of Congress seems to have lost her confidence in winning the by-polls. In an interview with PTI, she expressed her disappointment claiming that in the history of Wayanad the people always have voted for just one symbol, no matter who the candidate is and the same has happened this time as well.

Priyanka Gandhi is leading with 343340 votes, 225331 more than CPI's Sathyan Mokeri. Meanwhile, BJP's Navya Haridas is trailing in third position with just 65136 votes.

Deputy CM of Uttar Pradesh Brajesh Pathak expressed confidence in BJP's victory in state bypolls. He said that the BJP will win 8 out of 9 seats. "We have posed a tough competition to Samajwadi Party. Since there are more voters from their community, they are in a better position there..." Pathak said.

As the counting of bye-elections in Uttar Pradesh's Ghaziabad seat progresses, it reveals that Sanjeev Sharma of the Bharatiya Janata Party is leading with 54,734 votes, while Singh Raj Jatav of the Samajwadi Party is trailing by 13,417 votes and Parmanand Garg of the Bahujan Samaj Party is trailing by 6,388 votes.

Ruling Trinamool Congress (TMC) candidates have taken an unassailable lead in the bypolls held in the six assembly constituencies in West Bengal, with counting underway today. These results are drawing significant attention, especially in light of the ongoing protests related to the RG Kar Medical College incident, which has sparked public outcry in the state.

In Sitai, a Scheduled Caste (SC) constituency, TMC's Sangita Roy is leading by 1,22,342 votes, 93,208 more than her nearest rival, Dipak Kumar Ray of the BJP, who has so far secured 29,134 votes.

In Madarihat, a Scheduled Tribe (ST) seat, TMC's Jayprakash Toppo is leading by 66,315 votes, ahead of BJP's Rahul Lohar, who has received 25,165 votes. The seat was won by the BJP in the 2021 assembly polls was presumably a BJP stronghold.

In Naihati, TMC's Sanat Dey has bagged 71,759 votes against BJP's Rupak Mitra's 26,785.

In Haroa, TMC's SK Rabiul Islam has garnered 91,369 votes, against his rival, Piyarul Islam of the All India Secular Front, who is trailing with 14,211 votes.

TMC's Sujoy Hazra is leading in Medinipur with 65,168 votes, 21,032 more than BJP's Subhajit Roy (Bunty), who has secured 44,136 votes.

In Taldangra, TMC's Falguni Singhababu has polled 43,979 votes, 16,101 more than BJP's Ananya Roy Chakraborty, who has received 27,878 votes.

ECI trends at 12:20pm show BJP’s Ramveer Singh leading in Kundarki (Moradabad) by roughly 74,000 votes. The Muslim-dominated seat previously held by SP’s Zia Ur Rehman Barq (now Sambhal MP) has only been won once by BJP in 1993.

Mohammad Rizwan of the Samajwadi Party, Chand Babu of the Aazad Samaj Party (Kanshi Ram), Mohammad Varish of the All India Majlis-E-Ittehadul Muslimeen, and Rafatulla of the Bahujan Samaj Party are all trailing in the Kundarki Assembly Constituency.

Congress-led UDF has taken a comfortable lead of more than 10,000 votes against the BJP-led NDA which was ahead in the earlier rounds in the Palakkad Assembly bypoll as the counting of votes commenced on Saturday.

Congress candidate Rahul Mamkootathil is leading with 10,239 votes. He got 40,126 votes and BJP candidate C Krishnakumar secured 29,887 votes after nine out of 14 rounds of the counting, according to the Election Commission of India.

In Katehari, Ambedkar Nagar, a close contest is unfolding between BJP's Dharmraj Nishad and SP's Shobhawati Verma, with leads shifting after each round of counting.

The seat, once held twice by Lalji Verma—first as an SP member and later with the BSP—now sees Shobhawati Verma stepping into the race. She entered the fray after Lalji Verma vacated the seat upon being elected as the MP from Ambedkar Nagar.

Diganta Ghatowal of the Bharatiya Janata Party has won Behali bypoll seat in Assam with 9,051 votes, while Jayanta Borah of the Indian National Congress and Lakhikanta Kurmi of the Communist Party of India (Marxist-Leninist) (Liberation) have lost, with a loss of 9,051 and 45,854 votes respectively.

TMC candidates Sangita Roy won in Sitai seat, Jayprakash Toppo won in Madarihati and Sanat Dey won in Naihati seat.

The counting in rest of the three bypoll seats are underway and the TMC candidates SK Rabiul Islam, Sujoy Hazra and Falguni Singhbabu are leading in Haroa, Medinipur and Taldangra seats respectively.

Jitan Ram Manjhi's daughter-in-law Deepa Kumari wins Imamganj seat on Hindustani Awam Morcha (Secular) ticket in Bihar bypolls.

Shiggaon - Congress candidates Pathan Yasirahmedkhan won this seat with 100756 votes.

Sandur - Congress candidate E Annapoorna has won this seat with 9,649 votes.

Channapatna - Congress candidate C P Yogeeshwara won this seat with 112642 votes.

Clashes broke out between agents of BJP and Bahujan Samaj Party agents inside a counting centre in Phulpur over alleged irregularities in counting.

Prayagraj DM Ravindra Kumar Mandar who reached the spot told PTI, "Around 20 rounds of counting have concluded. An argument happened between election agents of BSP candidate Anoop Kumar Singh and BJP candidate Deepak Patel over hooting, this led to a scuffle. We immediately brought the situation under control, the counting has resumed now. Such behaviour inside a counting hall is an unpardonable crime and we will act tough on this."

In Uttarakhand's sole bypoll seat Kedarnath, Asha Nautiiyal of the Bharatiya Janata Party won with a gain of 5,622 votes, while Manoj Rawat of the Indian National Congress and Tribhuwan Singh, an Independent candidate lost.

C P Yogeeshwara who won the Channapatna assembly by-poll on the Congress ticket said the JD(S) is breathing its last following the defeat of his opponent Nikhil Kumaraswamy. He said the Channapatna by-poll was about the existence of JD(S) for which Deve Gowda and Kumaraswamy bet on Nikhil.

Nikhil, the son of Union Minister H D Kumaraswamy and grandson of former Prime Minister H D Deve Gowda, was contesting the election on the JD(S) ticket as part of BJP led NDA.

He also said that people have delivered a clear message that the JD(S)-BJP alliance will not work.

The BJP won Ghaziabad, Khair and Phulpur assembly seats while the Samajwadi Party bagged Sishamau and Karhal in the Uttar Pradesh bypolls, results of which were announced on Saturday.

The ruling BJP is leading in three of the nine seats for which bypolls were held on November 20 and its ally RLD is ahead in one, according to the Election Commission (EC).

BJP's Phulpur candidate Deepak Patel defeated his nearest rival and Samajwadi Party (SP) nominee Md Mujtaba Siddiqui by a margin of 11,305 votes. Patel got a total of 78,289 votes, the EC website showed.

In Ghaziabad, BJP's Sanjeev Sharma defeated his nearest rival and SP candidate Singh Raj Jatav by a margin of 69,351 votes. Sharma got a total of 96,946 votes.

In Khair, BJP's Surender Diler got 1,00,181 votes and defeated SP's Charu Kain by a margin of 38,393 votes.

The SP retained Sishamau and Karhal assembly seats, according to the EC.

In Karhal, SP's Tej Pratap Yadav defeated BJP's Anujesh Pratap Singh by a margin of 14,725 votes. Yadav got a total of 1,04,304 votes.

In Sishamau, SP's Naseem Solanki defeated BJP's Suresh Awasthi by 8,564 votes. Solanki secured 69,714 votes while Awasthi got 61,150. The Bahujan Samaj Party's (BSP) Virendra Kumar was a distant third with 1,410 votes.

After SP's rise in Lok Sabha election few months back, BJP tried hard to redeem itself in the bypolls.

Congress General Secretary Priyanka Gandhi Vadra comfortably cruised to her maiden electoral win from the Wayanad seat, surpassing the 3.64-lakh lead achieved by her brother Rahul Gandhi in the 2024 Lok Sabha polls earlier this year.

Priyanka won Wayanad constituency by a margin of over 4.1 lakh votes against LDF candidate, CPI's Sathyan Mokeri.

After disappointing results in Lok Sabha results earlier this year, the BJP has won six seats while its ally RLD clinched one of the nine assembly seats in Uttar Pradesh where bypolls were held on November 20.

The Samajwadi Party (SP) who performed better than expected during the last elections have only been able to secure the remaining two seats - Sishamau and Karhal.

The BJP’s winning candidates included Sanjeev Sharma (Ghaziabad), Surender Diler (Khair), Deepak Patel (Phulpur), Dharmraj Nishad (Katehari), Ramveer Singh (Kundarki) and Suchismita Maurya (Majhawan).
