Barkha Bisht Breaks Silence On Her Transgender Comment: Pretty Can Have Many Connotations
Barkha Bisht was slammed on social media when she said that she was too "pretty"to play a transgender. The actor has cleared the air on this statement.
Speaking to India Today, Barkha Bisht said that she does not want to defend herself but the word – pretty – can be interpreted in a multitude of ways. She said, “Firstly, I don't want to sound like I am defending myself but the word pretty can have many connotations. While it might sound like overconfidence, it also is about insecurity about pulling that part off. Also, I used the words pretty and petite because I was unsure how my director is visualizing me in the part of Chanda, who comes from a very raw side of the community.”
The actor elaborated on her role in ‘Safed’ and talked about the challenges she faced while portraying the role of Chanda. She added, “As an actor, we are all constantly doing de-glam roles. No one wants to be known as just a pretty face, but one needs to look at the part, the film to understand what I was talking about. These people have no food, no space, are sleeping on the road, on top of each other. They live a hard life.”
Earlier, Barkha Bisht’s co-actor in ‘Safed’, Meera Chopra had taken to social media to express how she disagreed with Barkha’s statement. She wrote, “I disagree with Barkha's statement suggesting that someone is 'too pretty' to play a transgender role…I firmly stand in support of the LGBTQ community, emphasizing the importance of fair representation and rejecting any form of discrimination based on physical attributes.”
‘Safed’ is set to stream on ZEE5 from December 29 onwards. It revolves around the love story between a transgender and a widow.
