Indian pacer Mohammed Shami was considered ready to travel to Australia for the last two matches of the ongoing Border-Gavaskar Trophy. However, recent comments from India’s captain, Rohit Sharma, have clarified the situation. (Day 3 Highlights | More Cricket News)

There have been calls to bring Shami in on an emergency basis, but Rohit has stated that while "doors are open" for him, the bowler has developed swelling in his knee.

"The door is very much open for Mohammed Shami, but while playing in the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy, he developed swelling. We are monitoring him, and we don't want to put any pressure on him,” Rohit said. His body language seemed less than optimistic despite the mounting pressure to bring Shami back.

"We will take the call based on what the BCCI medical team feels," the skipper said as his body language didn't seem to be too optimistic although pressure is mounting on bringing him back.

Shami played a crucial role in India’s campaign during the home World Cup last year, where the Men in Blue lost to Australia in the final in Ahmedabad. Following that, he underwent heel surgery and was out of action for almost a year.

He recently made his comeback in domestic cricket while playing for Bengal, impressing everyone with his performance. Bengal is set to play Chandigarh in the pre-quarterfinal game of the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy 2024 on Monday.

Earlier, reports were suggesting that Shami would fly to Australia after completing Bengal's campaign in the SMAT, making him available for selection in the Boxing Day Test match.

However, after Sharma's revelation, Shami's chances of playing in Australia during the ongoing Border-Gavaskar Trophy appear to be diminishing. The five-match bilateral series is currently tied at 1-1 after India suffered a 10-wicket defeat in the Pink Ball Test match at the Adelaide Oval on Sunday.
