Small Steps, Big Impact: Cognitive Engagement to Combat Dementia And Alzheimer's

Dementia, a broad term encompassing various cognitive impairments that hinder daily life, casts a long shadow over our aging population. Dementia takes on many forms, but Alzheimer's, a neurologic disorder that causes brain cells to decay, stealing memories and cognitive abilities, reigns supreme.

It's more than memory loss; it's a progressive decline accounting for 60-70% of dementia cases, now the 7th leading cause of death and an alarming threat for the global elderly population. WHO estimates there are over 55 million people grappling with dementia, and nearly 10 million new cases surfacing every year.

The Dementia Crisis

According to the Global Burden of Disease study, India will witness an alarming 197% surge in dementia cases by 2050, reaching 11.44 million people, up from 3.84 million in 2019. This surge is propelled by population growth and aging but fueled further by lifestyle factors, such as smoking, obesity, high blood sugar, and limited education on the subject.

However, Dr. Neeraj Jain, a practicing neurologist in Navi Mumbai, shared his thoughts on the Lancet Public Health report, stating that India's burden of dementia will be much higher than what the Global Burden of Disease data shows because the problem is primarily underreported in the country.

Staying active for a healthy mind

Preventing Alzheimer's may seem overwhelming, but recent research suggests that keeping the brain agile and engaged is a powerful defense. Alzheimer’s Society, a care and research charity based out of the UK for people with dementia and their carers, found that certain activities can delay the onset of Alzheimer's disease. Activities that include high levels of cognitive activity, such as physical and mental games, exercising, eating healthy, staying socially active, etc., lower the risk of developing dementia among older adults.

Innovative Initiatives for Dementia Awareness

Mobilizing against the global danger of Dementia and Alzheimer’s among the elderly in India, several old age homes are taking strides with initiatives that shed light on the innovative role of recreational & mental activities in preventing and combating Alzheimer's.

VridhCare, an NGO dedicated to the welfare of senior citizens for the past four years, has been actively engaged in various thoughtful initiatives. Understanding the need for engagement and good health to prevent dementia among senior citizens, the organization conducts nutritious food drives in old age homes across India and curates leisure activities to keep senior citizens engaged through festive celebrations, games, and social interactions. In a unique collaboration, Mobile Premier League (MPL), India's leading eSports and mobile gaming platform, has collaborated with VridhCare to launch an innovative campaign called "Gamers for Dementia Awareness" on World Alzheimer's Day on September 21. This campaign aims to sensitize young individuals to the symptoms, preventive measures, and early detection of dementia so that they can share this crucial knowledge with their elderly loved ones. By partnering with MPL, VridhCare will reach old age homes in five major cities, distributing wellness packages to promote an active and healthy lifestyle among seniors. This initiative can?potentially equip the elderly and the youth with valuable information about the signs and symptoms of dementia, empowering them to take proactive steps for the well-being of senior citizens.

Helpage India, a leading charity platform in India working with and for disadvantaged elderly, provides comprehensive support for senior citizens with dementia or Alzheimer's through various initiatives. They operate an Alzheimer's Helpline, a toll-free resource that offers information and assistance to individuals affected by Alzheimer's disease, including caregivers and the general public. This helpline acts as a vital connection to local resources and support networks. Additionally, Helpage India conducts a Dementia Caregiver Training Program designed to equip caregivers with essential knowledge and skills related to dementia, covering crucial areas like understanding the condition, effective communication, behavior management, and self-care. These initiatives collectively contribute to enhancing the quality of life for seniors living with dementia and their caregivers.

In the fight against dementia, every small step counts. With organizations like VridhCare and Mobile Premier League stepping up to combat this global menace head-on, their tireless efforts in promoting awareness, providing support, and fostering engagement among the elderly and youth are beacons of light in an otherwise grim landscape. Let us remember that the power to change the trajectory of this condition lies not just in the hands of medical professionals but also in the collective efforts of society to find a glimmer of optimism to ensure a brighter future for all, regardless of age.

Sri Sai Satayu Nirog Sanstha emphasizes the importance of dispelling misconceptions about Alzheimer's and dementia, providing support to caregivers and families, promoting early diagnosis, and raising awareness about the profound impact of these conditions on cognitive abilities. We are grateful to the VridhCare Foundation and Mrs. Gargi Lakhanpal for their invaluable support in our mission to enhance the lives of those affected by Alzheimer's disease and dementia through care, support, and research. Together, we can make a difference in the lives of those facing these challenges.

Alzheimer's disease is its most common manifestation and its incidence is on the rise in India. As the disease impacts the part of the brain that controls thought memory and language, it significantly limits the ability of elders to lead a normal and safe life. Awareness about how to slow down the process and manage it effectively is of critical importance both for elders suffering from it and those living around such elders.
